Kelly's birthday and my first cake order

Louisa May Alcott wrote: “Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them and try to follow them.”

Maybe Louisa was talking about writing one of the most acclaimed novels of her time, "Little Women," or maybe she was talking about even the most simple aspirations like sewing a button or arranging a beautiful bouquet. However she meant it, her words speak to me as I reminisce my latest cake creation. Saturday was my friend Kelly's birthday and I so boldly extended the offer of baking her a cake for her birthday bash that evening. She was delighted because after seeking prices around town she realized she simply could not afford the kind of cake she wanted. Art in any form is tragic when the price for its beauty is a cost no bourgeois can afford. So joyously, I embarked on the presently consuming adventure of creating another confectionery delight. What I came up with was a two-tiered strawberry filled chocolate cake with almond butter cream icing. The design I chose was a damask pattern matching the invitation for the bash. Damask is back! I have to say that this cake was really pushing my basic piping skill, but all in all it was a success and at this point in my premature cake career I am just thanking God that the cake was tasty.
