Baby Steps

And we're off....the announcer rang in my head as I attempted to cautiously and concisely decorate my very first cake. Stars, dots, and swirlies meticulously sculpted onto the the surface of medium stiff buttercream frosting. I have to admit that despite my years of experience as a painter and printmaker, jumping feet first into the unknown dimension of cake decorating was exhilarating and terrifying at the same time.

I was inspired a few months ago to decorate a cake. Naturally instead of reading a book or watching youtube I decided to embark on the noble adventure of enrolling in a class. I have to admit that I expected nothing less than stay-at-home moms or vintage women to share my love for a new adventure. I however was pleasantly surprised to see that most of my classmates were like me; young, eager, and ambitious. I look forward to a camaraderie that may engage and encourage and if nothing else, feed my delight in friendly competition.

My first creation is a double-layered angel food cake with blackberry filling iced with the standard almond buttercream frosting required for the class. The review from my first audience was a pleasant and satisfying YUM!

I love the word "vintage" which describes my age group! Kudos to your ambition to start this new hobby. I certainly hope we have the treat of tasting your sweet morsels. Cute name, "sweet morsels" if you open a bakery!
